Edwardian (1890-1915)

ABOUT THE ERA

The Edwardian era overlapped the Art Nouveau period, beginning in 1901 when Queen Victoria’s son Edward took the throne of England, and ending in 1914 with the beginning of World War I. Advances in metal fabrication finally allowed for the use of platinum in jewelry, enabling designs to become much more detailed and intricate than previous eras. Additionally, a new type of decorative enhancement called "milgraining" was used extensively during this period as well, which involves a small border of platinum beads set around the edges of a vintage engagement ring to add a soft, elegant look. Unfortunately for all the Edwardian engagement ring lovers out there, the era came to an abrupt end with the start of World War I in 1914. Platinum became temporarily scarce due to its demand for use in the war effort, and jewelry production itself came to a halt. We cherish Edwardian engagement rings for their rich history, uniqueness and femininity. We hope you love them as much as we do!

Some of the most intricately designed antique engagement rings come from the Edwardian era, and we can't ever have enough of them! Jewelers in this era discovered that they could make incredibly detailed designs using the strength of platinum, which is one of the hardest and most durable metals used in engagement rings even today. Some vintage rings from the Edwardian period are so detailed that it appears the diamonds or colored gemstones are set in lace instead of metal! Antique engagement rings from this era are handmade and known for appearing light and airy, using as many diamonds as possible in a single design. What's not to love?
