ABOUT THE ERA

Most vintage Victorian engagement rings date all the way back to the California Gold Rush, even pre-dating World War I, the sinking of the RSS Titanic, and the invention of the Ford Model T! It’s safe to say that antique Victorian rings are “old,” but that’s exactly what makes them unique. When it comes to Victorian engagement rings, we think the old saying is completely true: "They just don’t make em’ like they used to!"

The Victorian era spans just over 50 years, from 1835-1890. The era was named after Queen Victoria of England, who inherited the throne in 1837 when she was just 18 years old. Victoria was extraordinarily well loved, and her tastes in fashion and jewelry inspired the trends of the time. Victorian era jewelry is typically romantic, bold, and inspired by nature.

Colored gemstones such as black onyx, opal, sapphire, ruby, emerald, garnet, and amethyst are very common, and designs are typically very unique. Queen Victoria's husband, Albert, had a special love for opals, and many of the antique engagement rings we see from this era feature opals as a representation of their relationship. After Albert’s death, vintage Victorian engagement rings reflected the Queen’s period of mourning, and we see a lot of black onyx, enamel, and engraved gold from these years.

The late Victorian period (1890-1901) brought a return to romance, and designs were once again lighter, colorful, and feminine. The Victorian era came to a definite close with Queen Victoria’s passing, ushering in the Edwardian era, when her son ascended the throne. The very first diamond solitaires were vintage Victorian engagement rings that originated in the late 1800s, so wearing an authentic antique solitaire ring is anything but ordinary! The Victorian era represents over 50 years of incredibly unique jewelry design, so we hope you love the antique Victorian engagement rings in our collection as much as we do!

We have a special place in our hearts for antique Georgian and vintage Victorian engagement rings! As the oldest rings in our collection, authentic Victorian engagement rings have extraordinarily rich histories—especially since they have been loved for well over 100 years already. If you have your heart set on a Victorian engagement ring, we’ll be the first to point out that these beautiful antiques are not indestructible, and will need perhaps a little more TLC than some of the more modern rings in our collection. When given proper care and attention, antique Victorian engagement rings will last for generations to come.
